“a pure, abstract, non-objective, timeless, spaceless, changeless, relationless, disinterested painting—an object that is self-conscious (no unconsciousness), ideal, transcendent, aware of no thing but art.”

when i was about 5 or 6 years old i went to the museum with my dad. we walked up to a painting exactly like this and i go “what’s so great about that?”
19 or so years later after being a fine arts major in college, studying a art history and going to fashion design school i know look at this and go “WTF mate?”

ARTSY FARTSY.

i suppose this means i can buy a blank canvas and send it to a gallery andthey will accept yes?

This kind of ‘art’ just infuriates me. Oh, let’s just paint a canvas/draw some squares or lines OH LOOK HOW FUCKING DEEP I AM AND THE INSIGHTS I AM OFFERING ABOUT MODERN SOCIETY. Looking at this after studying the beautiful Italian and Northern Renaissance works just makes me laugh.

it’s not meant to be “deep”. the way you’re viewing art is based on preconceived aesthetic. aesthetic does not necessarily mean art, which is the point of this piece.

what is the function of a canvas? art has no utilitarian use. it does not hold a floor up. the reason a floor is not art is because it’s primary function is to make sure you don’t fall. is painting dead? the reason paintings with lines and blocks of colors exist, the reason mondrian painted what he did is because it transforms a canvas attached to a frame with staples it is a way of showing hey look painting isn’t the issue here. it’s the way people have preconceptions of what painting SHOULD be. the only reason painting is so appreciated is because it has such a rich history engrained in us. LOOK IT’S A BEAUTIFUL PAINTING COOL move on. at least this makes you go what the fuck. which is why it’s nice at least. it’s not a beautiful commissioned portrait sure. we are surrounded by beautiful pictures of dido burning and ophelia drowning in our old high school english books. it’s time for something different you little shits you little shits.

YES! this is a starting point. it’s challenging ideas. painting is a medium, not art. sculpture is a medium, not art.
